#4 - ARCANE'S ART STYLES (INTRODUCTION)

Arcane chose two different art styles to represent the two different cities that are key to the story: Art Deco (Piltover), Art Nouveau (Zaun).

As I said in #2 - ABOUT ARCANE, Piltover is about peace, prosperity and order, but it is a classist and elitist society where moral hypocrisy is the order of the day. In Zaun poverty, violence and criminality are the norm, but its inhabitants dream of a better life and continue to use their ingenuity, their tenacity and the camaraderie that unites them.

Art Deco was a style of the 20’s. In general, the vibe of The Great Gatsby (2013) or the Empire State Building.

Art Nouveau was a style of the early 1890's that got very popular. In general, the vibe of La Sagrada Familia.

They’re both movements born out of industry and innovation. Both of them the result of post-war optimism (when there was peace and people were ready to spend a lot of money). Deco fresh off the Napoleonic Wars and Nouveau after the First Wold War (1914-1918). They were flashes in the pan. Nouveau was only around for about five teen years and Deco more or less the same, for twenty to thirty years.

These two art styles are very different but very clever. Despite their obvious differences, they have similarities: just at a glance, the visual differences between the two art styles are apparent and there are a couple benefits to that. On a practical side, it makes for an instant read.

It’s immediately clear where we are at, so that means they’re able to jump back and forth between the two places seamlessly without the audience being confused as to whether they’re in Piltover or Zaun.

About the deep details and characteristics of each style you'll have to wait 'till the upcoming posts. I have planned to talk about them individually and another post of these elements in Arcane. But obviously here we see the visual references to each styles and the use that they give to Art Deco as the poor city and Art Nouveau as the rich and advanced town.

XOXO
